The City

Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu’s 2nd largest city on the foothills of the Nilgiris, is the highest revenue earner for the state after Chennai, with the textile, engineering and automotive industries accounting for 10% of the total sales tax collection. As a major export hub, Coimbatore’s 280 textile mills earn Rs 6,350 million from exports of 60 million kg of cotton yarn annually.

Coimbatore’s textile industry has fostered neighbouring towns like Erode, Karur and Tirupur. Tirupur has shot into the limelight as the biggest hosiery town in India with exports surpassing USD 1 billion annually.

Coimbatore’s pleasant environs, 50 reputed institutes of learning and ample employment opportunities for the 4000 engineering graduates that pass out every year make it a hospitable place for living. As a fertile ground for IT companies, Coimbatore has ventured into this sector and has 100 companies already operating in the city.

Coming up close is medical tourism in Coimbatore – the city boasts of some of the best healthcare skills and facilities in the region and only the lack of international flights is hampering its progress.

Coimbatore’s expanding economic base has created the need for better infrastructure and more housing units, commercial spaces, hotels and entertainment avenues. The business environment is very conducive for real estate in Coimbatore, where the market is driven by a genuine demand by end-users.

Infrastructure and Facilities

Residents and industry associations have been demanding a revamp of Coimbatore’s existing infrastructure. In response, several projects have been earmarked for the city, starting with a proposal to the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission for schemes worth Rs.3, 186 crore. The Indian Institute of Architects has been roped in for the city’s makeover plan. A Coimbatore Urban Area Development Authority as a statutory body for the planning and development of the Coimbatore urban area has been proposed for regulating the growth of Coimbatore city and its satellite colonies, including the textile hub of Tirupur.

Intersected by 6 arterial roads and highways NH 47 to Salem, NH 67 to Nagapattinam and NH 209 between Bangalore and Dindigul, Coimbatore has efficient inter-city links. The bypass road made to international standards connects the four major highways. 8 kms from the city is the Peelamadu airport which is due for an expansion.

A ring road around the city has been proposed and the Avanashi Road between Uppilipalayam and Neelambur is required to be upgraded to a four-lane road. The need for a convention centre and the upgradation of the Coimbatore airport has also been voiced by industry associations in the city. Roads to the airport and to Salem, widening of the narrow bridges,  and flyovers at important junctions near Lakshmi Mills and Gandhipuram are infrastructure projects being pursued.

Coimbatore’s infrastructure to support the growing IT industry finds expression in 4 IT parks covering 3.5 lakh sq ft besides the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT)  IT Park. 3 IT parks sized 3.25 lakh sq.ft are currently under construction, while10 more are proposed measuring  up to 9.25 lakh sq. ft.

The KG group will develop an ITES and BPO Special Economic Zone on 160 acres on Thudiyalur road near Saravanampatti, while ELCOT will build the BU-ELCOT city on 109 acres within the Bharathiar University campus.

Raheja Towers on Dr.Nanjappa Road will cover 170,000 sq. ft of IT space, while Rajshree Itec is a futuristic software park on Avinashi Road spread over 8.33 acres.
