NRI Event at Connecticut Honours AchieversTuesday, May 01, 2007
The first anniversary of the Connecticut Chapter of the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO-CT) was celebrated in Stamford on 22nd April, 2007. The occasion was attended by chief guests Congressman Christopher Shays and Consul General Neelam Deo at the Italian Center of Stamford. The event was well attended by 250 non resident Indians and persons of Indian origin in the US, and American patrons from Connecticut, Westchester, New York and New Jersey. Amongst the speakers on the occasion were Dr. Thomas Abraham, Amarjeet Singh, Neelam Deo and Christopher Shays, who lauded the Indian community in the US for its very commendable achievements. The GOPIO International Chairman, Dr. Thomas Abraham appreciated the Connecticut chapter for its success in the first year of its functioning. GOPIO-CT had initiated a number of interactive sessions with policy makers, and organized NRI events pertaining to health, youth and parents during its first year. During the convention, four NRI achievers were commemorated: Professor T.N.Srinivasan, Padma Bhushan awardee and Jr. Professor of Economics at the Department of Economics at Yale University for his work on economics and public policy; Dr A.V.Srinivasan, for his pioneering efforts in engineering and social work; Rajendra Shukla, philanthropist for his enduring efforts in community service in India and the US; and the Namaskar Foundation, represented by Dr. Krishnan for enabling Indian artists to perform in the USA for the last 2 decades. Dr. A.V.Srinivasan, who also spoke during the occasion, appealed to the members to work towards the establishment of an Indian Center in Connecticut. He spoke fervently on the positive contribution non-resident Indians in the USA could make with their innovative ideas.
