Coming Up: Indian Carnival for NRIs in the USThursday, May 31, 2007
In its pursuit of establishing and renewing ties with NRIs, the Indian Government is planning an intervening event on the lines of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in the United States. "India at 60" would be organized over 4 days in the US during the third week of September, showcasing India after 60 years of independence. The Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) and the CII, who are already working together on the Facilitation Centre for NRIs in New Delhi, would be organizing the event. The commerce and tourism ministries would also participate in the pageant. The event aims to revive cultural interest and investment from NRIs in US , NRIs in Canada and the Caribbean. On a budget of Rs. 60 lakh for the event, the MOIA would be able to reach out to a larger audience of NRI investors who are otherwise unable to make it to the annual Pravasi Bharatiya Divas held in January every year in India. Preparations for the carnival are in full swing, and the ministry expects a confirmation of the extent of participation by mid-June. MOIA plans to organize similar events in 30 countries where NRIs reside in large numbers.
